Lippizanas are a breed of horse used by the Spanish Riding School in Vienna.
They are a majestic animal trained to perform flamboyant displays and are highly disciplined.
The Auckland based trio Lippizanas perform on instruments that have been heard throughout the history of Jazz but have been under-utilized by the bulk of Jazz performers:
John Bell - vibraphone/xylophone/tuba
Kelly Choi - clarinets/fife
Chris O'Connor -percussion set/glockenspiel
At present the Lippizanas' repertoire includes pieces by Carla Bley, Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, John Bell and Kelly Choi. The repertoire and improvising style is influenced by many genres including Jazz Fusion, Free Jazz and Early Jazz particularly.
