Experimental Multimedia project by Mike Hodgson (Now known to all as New Zealand finest Electronica act PITCHBLACK. His first official output was a run of 17 hand-lettered cassettes containing experimental sonic environments as Tinnitus, July 1986. Working with audio mangler Angus McNaughton they produced multimedia events and released 13 DIY albums over the next three years.
1988, the sonic eccentrics discovered more exciting noisemakers-samplers! This led to an upsurge in the number of rhythmic elements and the boys found themselves inside the fledgling underground dance scene. Visual manipulation had always played a large part in Tinnitus performances and the early 90's was the perfect time to explore the role of the VJ within the arts and live music scene. Over the next few years Michael provided visual enhancement for performances by The Headless Chickens, JPSE (Jean Paul Satre Experience) Supergroove, NRA and many others. In 1992 he released the first of two Dub infused remix albums under the name Projector Mix,working with the likes of DLT, Nemesis Dub Systems, Hallelujah Picassos and Sound Foundation.1994 saw Michael collaborating with an early incarnation of Salmonella Dub. It is a relationship that has continued to the present and includes many live tours and co-production duties. Mideo, a video sampler that enables real-time triggering of full-motion video from a synthesizer keyboard, was purchased and Michael was to spend the rest of the decade creating multimedia experiences culminating in the massive millennium night event in the Auckland Domain.Fifteen years of pushing audio and visual boundaries sees him working with Paddy Free in the electronic duo Pitch Black.
